Confidentiality and Its Limits

Confidentiality is an important part of the therapeutic relationship. Information shared during psychological appointments is kept confidential and will not be disclosed to others without appropriate consent, except where disclosure is authorised or required by law.

There are circumstances where confidentiality may need to be limited, including:

  • Where there is a serious threat to the life, health or safety of an individual or another person

  • Where information is required under a valid legal obligation, such as a court order

Where appropriate and safe, we will explain any necessary disclosure and involve you in the process. Any disclosure will be considered carefully, with regard to our professional and legal obligations.

Children's Privacy and Family Information

We recognise that children's privacy requires particular care and sensitivity. When working with children and adolescents, we consider their age, developmental capacity, understanding and individual circumstances when managing consent, confidentiality and access to information.

Parents or legal guardians are generally involved in decisions about a child's care where appropriate. However, parental responsibility does not automatically provide unrestricted access to all information shared by a child during therapy. We aim to balance the child's privacy, developing autonomy, safety and therapeutic needs with the rights and responsibilities of parents and guardians.

Where families are separated, we may need to clarify parental responsibility, relevant parenting orders and consent arrangements before collecting or sharing information.

Our approach to confidentiality and parent involvement will be discussed during the consent process.

Telehealth and Digital Platforms

Inner Child Psychology uses approved digital systems to support the safe delivery of psychological services. Our practice management system, Halaxy, is used to manage appointments, clinical records and telehealth services.

When providing services electronically:

  • We take reasonable measures to protect information transmitted electronically

  • Telehealth sessions are treated with the same confidentiality as in-person appointments

Although we take reasonable precautions, electronic communications, including email and internet-based services, carry inherent privacy and security risks.

We encourage clients to use a private space during telehealth appointments and to contact us if they have concerns about electronic communication.

Inner Child Psychology may use approved digital tools to support clinical administration, documentation and other practice activities. Any use of artificial intelligence involving client information must comply with our professional responsibilities, privacy obligations and internal AI Policy.

Where specific consent is required for the use of an AI-supported tool involving identifiable client information, this will be discussed and obtained before the tool is used. AI does not replace the professional judgement, clinical responsibility or oversight of our psychologists.
